Media Composer Core Skills for HETV in Wales

This hands-on session will ensure you have the core skills required in the use of Media Composer in a professional environment for HETV. The course gives you the foundation to build on with one of the most used tools in TV and Film in the UK and across the world. Med Composer is the go-to suite for the industry along with Nexis storage – a shared storage solution that aids in the seamless sharing of media and projects for multi-editor environments.

This course covers:

  • Two days training with one of the leading editors in TV across Wales and the UK
  • Learn the fundamental tools and processes in using Media Composer
  • Take away the skills to be able to ingest, organise media, cut, export files and manage a project using Media Composer in a shared storage environment
  • Basics of Nexis storage use and administration 

This programme will be delivered by Gorilla Academy and is supported by the ScreenSkills High-end TV Skills Fund with contributions from UK high-end TV productions.

Who’s it for:

They training programme is for editors who are used to using other non-linear editing packages, new entrants who have not had guided support in the use of Media Composer in a post production facility and editors who have not had experience of using Media Composer in a shared storage environment and want to learn more about collaborating with other editors on a project.

What it covers:

In this two day course you will be introduced to Media Composer and Nexis storage and walked through the skills required to edit within a shared working environment. Most programmes editing and delivered in the UK have been cut using Media Composer and edited by multiple editors throughout the programmes life cycle so its essential to gain skills and tips on how to handle yourself in a post production environment.

Once compete you will feel confident with the basic use of Media Composer as well as confidence in handling shared resources across a project.

  • Overview of the interface and tools
  • Starting a project and working in a shared storage environment
  • A basic overview of Nexis workspace administration
  • Basic edit techniques & Tools
  • Organising footage, bins and clips
  • Getting to grips with the sequence
  • Refining the edit
  • Working with audio
  • Basic transitions
  • Basic effects
  • Rudimentary colour and image adjustments
  • Output options and exports
  • The “offline” and “online” process

Paul Owen

Paul Owen has been a major player in Post Production in Wales for over 25 years. He has been an editor using Media Composer for all of this time as well as being a qualified Avid Trainer for the last 10 years.

He has large portfolio of productions under his belt and continues to edit, regular sort after by some of the biggest production companies in Wales.

Speaking both English and Welsh, Paul’s cuts have spanned across many genres including drama, documentary and sports.
